About

‘I was sent away to boarding school at 7 (unfortunately or fortunately)… I remember there was this corridor in the classroom block, I always remember this door. It was always slightly open and always appeared to be in darkness... One day my curiosity got the better of me…and there it was...a darkroom. So, after classes had finished with no one around I would sneak into this room, lock the door and fiddle around with all the chemicals, paper and stuff… I wanted to be a photographer from that moment. There was nothing else in my mind, at all.' …The Awakening is the rest of the story. Photography so bitterly crisp and indicatively real Julian Cottrell's show tells a story, irrespective of time and transcending place. The Awakening spans Julian Cottrell's long and dynamic career from what some might, naively, call holiday snaps to shots taken for the likes of Vogue. Julian's eye will not disappoint, he speaks for all of us.
