About

This spring, Fabrica and Brighton Festival present a series of artworks by the Syrian-born, US based artist and architect Mohamad Hafez. Shown for the first time in the UK, these intricate dioramas of Damascus streetscapes architecturally represent the urban fabric of the Middle East and serve as a backdrop for the artist’s political and social expression.

Responding to the ongoing war in Syria, the exhibition depicts homes and neighbourhoods besieged by the civil war. Though tiny in scale these artworks powerfully capture the magnitude of the devastation and poignantly expose the fragility of human life.

At the heart of Mohamad’s work is a deep homesickness and a keen understanding of what it means to be an exile and a refugee, building a life in a new country. Journeys from an Absent Present to a Lost Past creates a space to share and understand this lived experience more deeply, and re-affirms the resilience and hopefulness of those forced to move to start again.

Please note Fabrica is closed on Mondays & Tuesdays.
