About

JOURNEY TO THE EAST (JTTE*) - Scotland’s premiere performance art and contemporary culture festival which centres queer, PoC and East Asian artists and artforms - returns to Glasgow from 22-30 September for its highly-anticipated next festival edition, expanding its reach across the city with a weekend of live performances at CCA, Tramway and a week-long residency at French Street.

JTTE Friday opening night live performances features Japanese DJ ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U who is considered one of the best in the world by his peers. Based in Tokyo, he brings his mind-bending, versatile mixes to Glasgow for the first time. Enter the void and lose your inhibitions in a fully immersive rave cave, with a live art participatory dance-floor meditation ceremony from Berlin-based duo, Alvin Collantes and Ben Okamoto surrounding the music to kick off the Festival weekend.

Saturday night features Matt Mullican, an iconic and influential performance artist working internationally since the 1970s who explores trance states in one of his unique and subversive live performances given under hypnosis, in this first presentation of his live performance work in Scotland. Another incredible Scottish premiere at JTTE - New York based transfem-activist artist Keioui Keijaun Thomas blends sound, light, poetry, dance and music as forms of resilience and healing.

On Sunday Taiwanese performance producer and live artist River Lin (shortlisted for the 2022 ANTI Live Art Prize) will present River Walk, a solo performance piece that draws and imprints body movements as an action painting through choreography to create an image of rivers, along with JTTE Festival Artistic Director Jian Yi who follows up their critically acclaimed Weathervanes with a new multidisciplinary performance art and dance piece - Cloud States. Mapping the journey of queer migrant belongings set against the backdrop of Scottish country landscapes, the performance work will sit alongside a week-long multi-sensory installation and a schedule of masterclass workshops and other unmissable events as part of the JTTE takeover at French Street.
