About
Hornchurch and Beyond is the culmination of eight months'work by local artistJosh Law. After graduating with a BA 1 st class in Fine Art from Havering College, Josh taught and lectured Fine Art for five years before undertaking an MA in Art History and exhibiting work nationally. He is currently studying for his MA in Fine Art at the University of East London. This exhibition follows his journey through Hornchurch and the surrounding areas all the way to the Highlands of Scotland in a quest to understand the role that landscapes play in contemporary art.
Using the town of Hornchurch, where he lives and works, as a foundation for his exploration, Josh was keen to examine the plethora of natural open spaces and abandoned forms within this environment. Hornchurch Country Park, once the site
of an RAF airbase, now exists as a haven of wildlife and recreation. This landscape has imprinted upon it the ghosts of war with abandoned bunkers and concrete Tett turrets living harmoniously with nature. These once defensive structures are now rooted in the environment by the growth of the natural world around them. The uniqueness of the area, on the doorstep of central London, has often been ignored and overshadowed by better known beauty spots ... until now.
