Jonathan Hall’s paintings take domestic settings and imbue them with an unexpected ambiguity. Figures inhabit rooms undertaking straightforward activities, some rooms are left empty, but somewhere along the line a slight shift in perception has occurred to create unexpected and enigmatic scenes.
About
Jonathan Hall’s paintings take domestic scenes of ordinariness and imbue them with an unexpected ambiguity. Rooms and buildings are occupied by figures, often in the midst of a simple prosaic activity, that take on an enigmatic quality as commonality is altered and re-presented to us in a recognisable but slightly shifted appearance. We wonder what has led to this scene, and what happens next?
If we see a movie still from an unknown and unseen film printed in a newspaper it plays on our imagination and we automatically begin to imagine the surrounding narrative. In the same way Jonathan Hall’s paintings land us in the centre of an untold story; the clues are there but the plot is left undisclosed.
