Ahead of her solo exhibition in February, Johanna Bath introduces her paintings on the intangible subject of time with the mesmeric work, Jewel (2022). Bath is profoundly interested in the experience of time and the countless moments that define our lives. Her paintings seek to crystallise these brief experiences into dreamlike images that linger between the abstract and the visible world. Jewel depicts the artist’s ongoing endeavor to capture a moment, with a hand reaching out towards the white light of an orb in a tender haze of paint. This ethereal work brings to life the transience of time and the ephemeral flickers of touch, smell, and sight that haunt our memories. Is this hand reaching back into the past or ahead to the future? Or grasping for clarity in the present? Jewel hovers almost outside of time and speaks to the ultimate act of letting go and surrendering to the beauty of a moment.
