It is in the moments before a photograph is taken that we become most self aware. Be it through a slight pose, a lift of the shoulders or sometimes even a forced smile, we project the image of ourselves that we wish to be seen. It makes sense then that a more honest documentation is to be found in that uncomfortable moment than in the portrait itself. Creffield's work is an attempt to capture and suspend this moment in all of its awkward beauty, documenting a truer account of the self than a photograph could ever capture.
