About
mixed media installation, which comprises a sea of 100 cast hands of 100 leeds residents, ranging from 3 months to 100 years old at the time of its creation.
mounted at 'person height' the work creates a wave like effect, representing the wave of the generations. young and old. inseparable. flowing into each other. intermingled. we are all the same species; we are all old people in training.
the photographic memories of an older generation are shared and held by the hands. passing on of the stories, histories and events from one generation to another.
combining all generations, the installation highlights their connectedness, and challenges perceptions of the elderly. the project explores issues of isolation, dignity and investigates life, memory and ageing by focusing on photographs, reminiscing and the casting of hands.
on the 5th anniversary of its’ conception, the project ‘wave’ will breathe life once again and revisit some of the participants to share their reflections, memories and stories of the project and their thoughts as they move towards an older self.
