Exhibition: Jimmie Durham: Traces and Shiny Evidence
Parasol unit presents a solo exhibition of work by artist Jimmie Durham. For this solo exhibition Durham has created a new installation that covers the entire gallery space of the foundation. The galleries will be populated with brightly coloured oil barrels, painted replica animal bones and skeletons, automobile parts and coloured acrylic gel which will seep from plastic pipes in what appears to be an industrial spill.
A wall installation on the first floor gallery will display sheets of drawing paper on which can be seen the sparse, black-and-white contours of animal forms. Traces and Shiny Evidence will also include Durham's 90-minute video entitled Smashing. While the installation on the ground floor is vivid, physical and colourful, the installation on the first floor is sedate, ethereal, and black and white. Durham describes his installation at Parasol unit as âbeautiful death', which, despite all that is going on in it, would look sparse, almost austere if only it were not so cheerful.
