About

S|2 New York is pleased to present Jim Thorell: 7 Paintings curated by Nicholas Cinque, the first solo exhibition of the Swedish painter Jim Thorell in the United States. This exhibition exemplifies the artist’s delight in simultaneously revealing and concealing the inherent chaos of the subconscious. Thorell’s fertile amalgamations result in whimsical foliage that the artist prunes and shapes to create a sense of order in a setting of natural havoc. A lush unconsciousness develops on the canvases through a collation of form and color, recording the artist’s expressionistic governance of the mind’s workings and creative energy. Beneath the bright and positive gestural colors, images of fantastical creatures and vegetation germinate into an intuitive madness that the artist fights back to create these dream-like compositions.

Jim Thorell was born in 1981 in Stockholm, Sweden, where he currently lives and works. Thorell studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna with Professor Daniel Richter and completed his MFA at the Valand Academy, Sweden, additionally spending time at the Kanazawa University, Japan and the Vietnam University of Fine Arts.
