Ethel Loves Me in Rye is hosting a pop-up exhibition of work by local artist Jillian Eldridge.

About

The show is part of a series of exhibitions hosted by the gallery and destination store throughout this year, giving over space to local artists working in a variety of styles and mediums.

About her work, Jillian comments: “I work mainly in oil paint. My paintings, once purely of abstraction now have a more figurative quality, and as I watch the patch of world around my home more intently, they take on a deeper meaning. Earlier paintings came about through an interest in migration both ancient and in the present day, human, animal, bird and insect, and this is still highly relevant to current concerns with so many of our migrating wildlife species decreasing year on year.

My concern for the diminishing countryside and natural habitat influences my work. I split my time between meadow restoration and painting, and through doing so, my paintings become more about that landscape.”

Jillian has drawn and painted all her life, but only started her art education as a mature student in 1993. She went on to Wimbledon School of Art for a BA (Hons) Fine Art degree, and then later in 2004 completed her MA Fine Art Practice and Theory at the University of Brighton. She has worked in her studio at Rye Creative Centre for the last 13 years.

The exhibition runs until 26 June and the store is open daily.
