At the place where science and art meet, Jessica Lloyd-Jones explores ideas of energy and natural phenomena through the use of materials and of light, in order to provide new perspectives on the world in which we live.

About

Jessica’s most recent work responds to geological landscapes such as coal mines, using materials that include coal, iron oxide and plant life as the basis for photographic, sculptural and 2D work.

The exhibition will open on the 30th of April at 4pm with a talk from the artist about her work.  Jessica will talk about the experience of her recent residency at Leitrim Sculpture Centre, Ireland where she developed the body of work being shown (for the first time in Wales) at Oriel Mwldan.

She will discuss how the artworks evolved in response to the Arigna mine, including her attempts to take casts from the rock face, photograph the plant life surviving deep inside the tunnels and of her observations of iron oxide colouring on the mine walls that have inspired a whole new creative approach to her artistic practice.

It will be an opportunity to gain an insight into Jessica’s experience as a practicing artist, including her unique working process, and to hear about the ideas that inform this body of work relating to energy, matter and chemical reactions present in the landscape.
