As a gallery that attempts to champion painting, it is exciting to host this nationally renowned painting competition. The Jerwood painting prize has slightly reinvented itself. Abandoning the now common format of one major prize being awarded, (which often seems to reflect the needs of marketing as much it does issues of quality), they have decided to reward each chosen artist in the show with a similar award. This has the advantage in leaving viewers to make their own evaluations and to construct their own pleasures. The selectors are Graham Crowley, Elizabeth Magill and David Rayson.
