About

JERWOOD CONTEMPORARY MAKERS EXHIBTIION 5 June to 13 July 2008 OPENING HOURS: Monday — Friday, 10am — 5pm Saturday & Sunday, 10am — 3pm ADMISSION: Free A wall of porcelain dust destroyed by human touch, a hint of a domestic interior and shirts embroidered with emotions — seven British makers, working at different stages of their careers and in a range of craft disciplines, come together for the first Jerwood Contemporary Makers. Opening at the Jerwood Space in London on 5 June, this exhibition is set to challenge and intrigue, showing craft in a new and unexpected way. The makers selected for the exhibition have created work that responds to the theme of ‘touch' — be it the experience of touching something, how a work touches its surroundings or how we are emotionally affected by what we see. Oversized ceramic vessels, lettered sculptures, embroidery and tapestry will sit alongside computer generated metalwork, jewellery installations and an architectural intervention. The artists in the exhibition are: Gary Breeze Letter sculpture Sara Brennan Tapestry Lin Cheung Jewellery Drummond Masterton Metal Deirdre Nelson Textiles Nicholas Rena Ceramics Clare Twomey Ceramics Jerwood Contemporary Makers has been initiated by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation to encourage new and stimulating ways of showing work across a range of craft disciplines and to support emerging talent. It is the first in a series of three exhibitions that will run over three years at the Jerwood Space. Each exhibitor has been awarded an equal share of £30,000 to take part in the exhibition. The exhibitions will be curated by a different panel of experts each year. The selections for this first exhibition were made by ceramist, writer and curator Edmund de Waal (chair), joined by Swedish craft and design critic Love Jönsson and Amanda Game, former Director, Crafts The Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh, currently Lead Director IC: Innovative Craft, Edinburgh. Jerwood Contemporary Makers forms part of the Jerwood Visual Arts series. Launched in 2006, Jerwood Visual Arts is a series of awards and prizes that celebrate a range of disciplines across the visual arts, including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and digital moving image. Jerwood Contemporary Makers will show at the Jerwood Space, 171 Union Street, London SE1, from 5 June — 13 July 2008.
