This will be Jeremy Annear’s eleventh show with Messum’s and the group of fifty paintings present a profoundly engaging and satisfying testimony to Annear’s intuitive mastery of line, shape and colour.
About
The world that Jeremy Annear has embraced with his paintings draws deeply from the natural forms, extraordinary light, coastal landscape and historic layering of the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall, where he has made his home for the last 25 years.
Although his feet are placed firmly in Cornwall, Annear is a European Modernist committed to Brancusi’s famous maxim: ‘simplicity is complexity resolved’. In his latest series of dynamic, rhythmic, abstract paintings he opens up a whole new landscape of ideas – deeply contemplative pictures that reflect both deep religious convictions, and a profound love of music. This commitment places Annear amongst the esteemed lineage of Cornish modernists which began in the 1930s — with such artists as Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth and Terry Frost.
Visitor’s to this exhibition will be struck immediately by the distinctive surface of these jewel-like canvases with painterly surfaces which are meticulously rubbed back and re-worked, the underlying ground and canvas twill often visible and forming part of the composition. The artist draws our attention to the physicality of the canvas and paint itself, a factor which has played an important part in Annear’s development.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue, £15 with foreward by art historian Andrew Spira.
