About
About Jennifer Louise Martin
Jennifer graduated in Psychology and Neuroscience in 2003, and studied Fine Art at Central St. Martins. Having studied psychology, the female psyche plays an important role in her work, highlighting how the conflict between our sub-conscious and conscious cognitive process can influence our contemporary being. Her most recent paintings displace the figure or subject of interest in order to create a sense of detachment and ambiguity.
Jennifer sources carefully selected magazine imagery, inspired by the allure of high fashion and beauty photography, manipulating them to create bold arresting statements with a strong sense of character in her portraits. Hiding within the layers is an inquiry and response towards societal perception of where and how true beauty exists. Recent work explores the relationship between texture and colour through the manipulation of fabrics, mundane materials, and paint. Hand embroidery is used to suggest a sense of history and repetition, that is reflective of our sense of being and who we are.
There will be a large scale mixed media work on show as well as smaller works on paper.
