About

VEGAS Gallery 6-15 May Opening 6 May 6-9 pm www.vegasgallery.co.uk 274 Poyser Street E2 9RF London VEGAS Gallery is pleased to present a video screening by the British artist Jemima Stehli who gained acclaim for her provocative work in which photography and documented performance dominate. For the last three years, Jemima Stehli has been making work with a group of musicians based in Lisbon, Portugal. For her upcoming project at VEGAS gallery from 6 — 15 May, Stehli will be presenting 'set up, sound check, end' which is the first of a series of video works made with the 4 piece band PAUS. The video is 2 and a half hours long and is made in just four real time takes. It records the preparation and take down of the Portuguese bands' show in Leiria last year. Filmed mostly in close up, the camera focuses on the actions of the musicians as artists and technicians as well as performers. The whole piece is shot hand held so we are aware of the single point of view as the camera moves to frame the image as well as the sound. The proximity of the camera to the group men at work, describes the intimacy and the familiarity between the musicians as the atmosphere intensifies before the show. Jemima Stehli's recent exhibitions include TURN IT ROUND, ARTRA, Milan (solo) She looked back, Raum Mit Licht, Vienna, (solo) and Galeria Miguel Nabinho, Lisbon (solo) Peeping Tom, Kunsthal Kade Amersfoort Netherlands, Alice I Underlandet, Alice in Wonderland, The Finnish Museum of Photography, Helsinki, HUMAN, Musee d'Art Moderne et d'Art Contemporain, Nice, Crash, Gagosian Gallery, Brittania Street, London. Her other institutional credits include, Centro Cultural de Belem, Lisbon, Modern Art Oxford, Oxford , Centro de Arte Visuais, Coimbra, Portugal Palais Thurm and Taxis, Bregenz; Kettle's Yard, Cambridge, Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver and Chisenhale Gallery, London.
