Observational drawing lies at the heart of my practice. My recent work develops a process of recapturing the feelings on first observation, building up in layers and repeating the image with washes of oil and India ink, then drawn over, copied mono-printed and re-worked. This attentive layering captures glimpses of buildings and other objects, fixing the nostalgia they imbue and their transience.
Each artwork in this exhibition has been built up in layers, often with several washes of oil or Indian ink, which is then drawn over, copied, monoprinted and reworked. This process of attentive layering is a way to capture transient glimpses and fix them into lasting images of the buildings, spaces and moments that are fast disappearing from the city.
