Jean-Michel Basquiat became renowned during his short career for works that draw on a range of sources, from Greek, Roman, and African art to jazz, pop culture, and his artistic contemporaries, most notably his close friend and collaborator Andy Warhol. A native New Yorker, Basquiat first made graffiti under the tag "SAMO" as a teenager, along with producing postcards and t-shirts. He then began establishing his studio practice, finding fast fame at the age of 20. Though his career lasted barely a decade, Basquiat continues to have relevance as a bridge between graffiti and the gallery, and as an influence to subsequent generations of artists.
