JASON BRAHAM - Saltglazed Stoneware
About
I have been potting full time since late 2007 after quitting a 35 year career in teaching during which period I potted during the school holidays from a studio near Herefordshire. In 2003 we bought a Medieval farmhouse in Radnorshire, continued the restoration begun by the previous owner and built a new studio and kiln.My work is inspired by the traditions of saltglaze and slipware which I combine in pots for use. My 24 cubic foot downdraft kiln is fired on oil and wood. There is no preliminary bisque firing, so the pots are decorated as they are thrown or at leather hard stage. Interior glazes are based on combinations of wood ash, clay and feldspar while on the exterior slips of various clays are transformed into glazes by the fluxing effect of sodium vapour released as salt is cast into the fireboxes towards the end of each firing.A firing takes 24 hrs.
Our studios - my wife Julienne is a painter- can be visited by appointment at FAR HALL.DOLAU.LLANDRINDOD WELLS.POWYS LD1 5TW. Email: jason@farhallstudios.co.uk
