The Gloucestershire Guild of Craftsmen was pleased to be asked to partner with Made by Hand at their first ever show in Cheltenham in March 2018. As part of the partnership, we chose to give an award ‘The Maker’s Mark’ award, earmarked for a maker with a distinctive voice who could handle materials and techniques with respect and confidence.
'As the outgoing chairman of the Guild, I was excited to be asked to make the selection but somewhat overawed by the range of talent in the show until I chose ‘Jackie Makes Clogs’. What interested me about Jackie Leggett was that she comes from a tradition of clog making – her great grandfather used to make clogs in Maryport in Cumbria – but she has developed this traditional craft to make footwear with a really contemporary feel while still keeping the same care and respect for materials and techniques. Her stand was a blaze of colour, she was fizzing with enthusiasm and when you looked closely at her work each process was completed with the utmost care to a very high standard. Jackie has already had recognition in the world of both fashion and craft and we are looking forward to showing her work in ‘The Guild at 51’ in 2019. Mary Greensted
Jackie studied art at Carlisle College followed by a degree in footwear design at the former Leicester Polytechnic. At the New Designer Exhibition in London, Jackie then created her very first pair of clogs, paying homage to her great grandfather, who used to produce traditional clogs in Maryport.
A passion for beautifully crafted footwear was born. Since graduating in 1992, Jackie has produced exclusive clogs, made-to-measure footwear, bags and accessories.
All of Jackie’s creations are lovingly handmade, by her, in her house in Leicester. Her strong sense of style and her eye for vivid colours give her clogs a contemporary edge whilst always complimenting the natural beauty of the wood and leather. Using techniques she’s learned along her 20 years of experience she produces distinctive pieces to express your unique individuality.
