Say Hello, Wave Goodbye neatly weaves several motifs I’d been working up to over the preceding years, namely the painter’s glove, which became a palm tree, which became the glove again, going back and forth. The painter’s glove felt like a self portrait, the hand, a painting about making painting. The hand became a framing device.
Contrasted with the chance natural element of the palm tree, with its sense of exoticism, this seemed far removed from the painter’s studio, and suggested mythical art historical tropes. The works that followed Say Hello, Wave Goodbye riff on these contrasts.
The following words became touchstones as I worked:
Air guitar, agent Cooper, Alcázar of Seville, Arcades, Bacchanalia, Beefheart, Le Buveur d'absinthe 1859, botanic, Charnel House, Crosseyed and Painless, exotica, google maps, grid system, #, Tony Hancock, harlequin, jade, Let’s see, low lying fruit, Modern Lovers, Music in the Tuileries, mythology (Greek/Barthes/Krauss), noir, palm, paradise (lust/lost), pink angels, redux, remake/remodel, Scott Joplin, stumblebum, tarot variations, Trivaux Pond, trompe l’oeil, trope, urban tropicana
List of works:
