Jack Crabtree lives in North Wales, but was born in Rochdale in 1938. He is best-known for his social realist work of the 1970s and in 1974-75 was commissioned by the National Coal Board to present an artistic record of the changing face of the coalfields of South Wales.

Exhibition of new unseen paintings, many larger-scale, featuring Mining in the UK and Ruhr, and Belfast - the series Armed Struggle.

In 1977 he was awarded a Fellowship by the German Federal Government to do a similar internship among the miners of the industrial Ruhr Valley. Another industrial commission came in 1991, when the National Trust invited him to be artist in residence at Spade’s Mill, Northern Ireland. He studied at St. Martins and the Royal Academy Schools and had a long career as an art tutor firstly at art schools in Rochdale and Salford, before being appointed at Newport College of Art in 1966. From 1983 to 1986, he was professor of Fine Art at the University of Ulster, Belfast.
