About
Iulia Nistor deals with the potentiality of uncertainty and disorientation wherein painting becomes an epistemic instrument. Her painting process is a constant negotiation between informing and discharging the image and her approach is characterized by the tension between affect and method. In her works, a signifying language of images is built into a sensuous field using overlays and veils of tone creating phenomenal depth. The multiple layering and the repeated process of adding and subtracting introduce the dimension of time, which contrasts with the immediacy of the expressive and symbolic elements.
Pieces of Evidence is a format of paintings Nistor has been developing over the past two years. Each piece has the dimension 40 x 50 cm/ 50 x 40 cm and is painted in oil on wood. Often large-scale paintings originate from the process of engaging in the possible meaning of a small work from the Pieces of Evidence series. Rather than seeing these interpretations as results they reveal their own conditions and limitations, our human need to make sense out of things and thus direct us back to the phenomenal density of the small works.
