‘It’s A Royal Knockout’ is the second exhibition of paintings and installations by Luke Haines at GALLERY46
About
On 15th June 1987 a special charity event of a popular entertainment programme took place. ‘It’s A Royal Knockout’ was filmed and shown by the BBC on 19th June 1987.
Four teams led by Britain’s lions and lionesses of blooded nobility, blew poison darts at each other from their cosmic castles in Alton Towers. HRH Anne, The Princess Royal. Edward Prince of Actors. The popular Sarah Ferguson and Prince’s Rod Hull and Eno lead teams consisting of Toyah Wilcox, Duncan Goodhew, R. D Laing, William Blake and Ulrike Meinhof. Jousting, picking up logs, and tests of telekinesis were the games of the day. Events reached a finale as Dennis Waterman, British Judo champ Brian Jacks and strongman Geoff Capes battled it out attempting ‘Achievable Dances For Men.’ Brian Jacks was crowned man of the match for his re-enactment of Ian Curtis fabled ‘dead fly’ dance.
Like Eric Ravilious, Stanley Spencer, Paul Nash and the great war artists before him, Luke Haines was there to capture all of this with oil on canvas.
Opening event Saturday 28th Jan 1pm – 9pm,
Luke Haines will be on site for gallery walks and talks about the work all afternoon and he will also be performing a live solo set of songs at 7pm.
