In this course, learn about Islamic geometric patterns and how to construct lines to create an accurate and symmetrical work of art. You’ll then practice transferring your pattern onto lino to make a one colour lino print.
Age group and abilities to be taught
· 18 years and above.
· Ideal for beginners but suitable for all abilities.
Course aims and skills/knowledge to be taught
· Knowledge of Islamic geometric art, the basics of pattern making, and how they’ve been used in art
· Using a compass and ruler to construct geometric patterns seen in Islamic art and architecture
· History of lino printing and how to combine relief print with Islamic geometric pattern
· Carving linoleum sing traditional carving tools
· Rolling relief ink and experimenting with mixing colours for printing
Course outline for the day
Morning activity
· Look at the history of Islamic geometric pattern and how it’s been used in art and architecture
· You’ll be taught the basics of how to construct a pattern before experimenting with more complex templates
· You’ll choose one pattern to turn into a lino print and construct the lines before transferring it to lino
Afternoon activity
· Knowledge on the history of lino printing and how to correctly carve a piece of lino using cutting tools
· Cut your pattern using the tools to create your linocut
· Mixing colours to create your perfect shade to print, before applying on the lino plate and printing
· Participants can print multiple lino prints using their pattern and can even experiment with different colours
Methods of assessing outcomes
· Evaluation and discussion of individual students work during the session with the tutor
· Completion of the evaluation form.
