The history of pictures begins in the caves and ends, at the moment, with an iPad. Who knows where it will go next?
David Hockney (2016)

About

The portability and immediacy of the iPad makes it ideal for visiting museums, working discreetly, quietly, efficiently, mess free. The tablet is a mobile studio with an array of materials and techniques at your fingertips; paint, draw, cut, collage, paste and layer easily and quickly.*

This weekend course will cover the skills of observational drawing from the collections at the V&A and the British Museum, whilst exploring the potentialities of the iPad. Using the Procreate app in particular students will work through possibilities and build up a knowledge of approaches in response to the collections. The best method of discovery through transcription is to be face-to-face with artworks; the elements that make up the work and how it was made show thinking processes, how artists have solved visual problems and reveal new and meaningful insights in our perception. There might be an emphasis on something in particular that has been enhanced and exaggerated; this will help you to discover ideas and enable you to develop them.

'There is an immense difference between seeing a thing without a pencil in the hand and seeing it while drawing it. Even the object most familiar to our eyes becomes totally different if one applies oneself to drawing it: one perceives that one didn't really know it, one had never really seen it.'
Paul Valéry

*Students will need to bring their own iPads to this course as well as a stylus. The preferred drawing app is Procreate which is configured to iPad Pro. Other apps for iPad are: Brushes Redux and Adobe Sketch
