This new six-week short course led by artist Jake Garfield uses a different artwork each week to explore ideas relating to identity and the self in contemporary art.

About

‘What is a self-portrait?’ ‘To what extent can an artist’s public persona ever reflect their true self?’

Each week we focus on a different artwork to explore ideas relating to identity and the self in contemporary art. Topics include migration and diaspora, continuity of the self, digital realms, autobiography and gender. The sessions combine group discussion and reading with practical exercises in drawing and printmaking.

Discussion will cover a range of contemporary artists including Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Sophie Calle, Victoria Sin and Danh Vo.

A selection of short texts will be provided as guides for discussion but reading is not compulsory.

This workshop is suitable for beginners.
