About

From the 2nd of July to the 21st of August 2021, SEA Foundation presents ‘Intertwined’, a collaborative exhibition by Eva Spierenburg and Jesse van den Berg. Within the exhibition the artists question the multifaceted definition of empathy and explore how they themselves take position within this concept. Instead of presenting you with false answers, Spierenburg and Van den Berg present you with questions. The research they have started is not over yet, it has opened up a new path in their practice which they will continue to explore even after their time at SEA Foundation has ended.

How could you give space for empathy without asking for pity? How does materiality contribute to the experience of empathy? How does an artwork make your body feel things that are not physically happening? To what extent can an artwork even be empathic? - To Spierenburg and Van den Berg, these questions are inescapably connected to the theme of empathy. They do not know the answer to the questions they are asking, rather, they are triggered and inspired by them. The exhibition will be as multifaceted as the subject of empathy itself, showing individual notions and thoughts, as well as shared questions.

//Collaborative research//

‘Intertwined’ is the first result of a new project that was initiated by SEA Foundation as part of the programme on art and sustainability. In this project, two artists are invited to participate in a collaborative research project, focusing respectively on one of the programme’s 12 folds. The aim of the programme is to find common ground for collaboration, sharing knowledge and to give artists a new impulse for their practice. Participating artists meet each other, converse, probe, investigate and come to a conclusion, leaving both form and content to the duo working on the theme.

//About the artists//

Jesse van den Berg (they/them, he/him) (1996, NL) is a visual artist who researches the topic of queerness with a focus on intimacy. Jesse’s work is an ongoing exploration of queerness around them. With intimacy being the main focus, they look for ways to express their vision through lens-based media. Making the viewer aware of their thinking patterns while using the human body to investigate the meaning of gender and sexuality. In their research Jesse stays aware of the presence of the camera and how this affects the interaction between the model and the maker. With analogue photography in particular, Jesse is not only capturing intimacy but also integrates intimacy in the whole process of making. With their practice Jesse creates an experience of love, admiration and vulnerability.

Originally educated as a painter, Eva Spierenburg’s (1987, NL) work gradually shifted towards multimedia installations. These comprise an arrangement of painted objects, sculptures, drawings, found items, prints, video and most recently performance.

Spierenburg is interested in the correlation between our inner processes, and our physical body interacting with the world. She considers the body to be a carrier for the individual; a shell where experiences and sensory perceptions manifest themselves and are archived. In Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology, corporeality and being embodied are prerequisites for our understanding of, and interaction with, the world. Spierenburg aims to find a form for the human experiences that escape grip and language; a form for what happens in-between life and death. Recurring themes are the vulnerability of the body and mind, temporality, and the encounter between extremities like presence-absence, internal-external, solid-soft, earthly-spiritual.

//About SEA Foundation//

SEA Foundation is an independent, artist-led, residency-based venue for contemporary art. To fulfill our mission; To create awareness for contemporary art and to build cultural resilience, we act as a catalyst in the working lives of artists. In all our activities we are fuelled by visual arts. Transgressing the boundaries between disciplines and always putting the context and the idea before the medium. Through exchanges and working in different cultural contexts SEA Foundation is part of international networks, where we generate and take part in discussions on eminent issues.
