Inspired by optical art and abstract expressionism, each composition is painted in layers until it reaches realisation, often resulting in heavily textured work.
About
Emotions and thoughts are used during the making process to determine the colour and composition of his creations. “Art is a release, an escape”, Powell tells us. “Painting is incredibly intimate; everything is on show, mistakes and triumphs, for all to see”.
Surface Gallery is delighted to welcome Michael Powell, whose debut exhibition, Instinct, explores colour as energy through paint.
Powell’s intense paintings evolve through his personal interaction with colour. Inspired by optical art and abstract expressionism, each composition is painted in layers until it reaches realisation, often resulting in heavily textured work. Emotions and thoughts are used during the making process to determine the colour and composition of his creations. “Art is a release, an escape”, Powell tells us. “Painting is incredibly intimate; everything is on show, mistakes and triumphs, for all to see”.
The way we view art has changed, Powell observes. In this now instant world we expect all information to be handed to us, for without it we are lost. We expect art to have meaning and to be inspiring and to illuminate a new way of seeing the world. We expect the artist to have complete knowledge of what and why they are creating. “Why must art be so complex to understand? Why can’t art just be about the image or object in front of us?” Powell wants us to experience a world of pure colour, to become immersed, to return us to our senses.
