Magical Inspiral evening of performances and entertainments with a homemade dinner at the Gravesham Arts Centre.
About
Magical Inspiral evening of performances and entertainments with a homemade dinner at the Gravesham Arts Centre. This night includes unique performances and interventions from a range of invited Inspiral associate artists including:
Lost on the Thames! A Magic Lantern Adventure
Mollett and Morris will take you on a journey from the City to the Sea, but it will be no ordinary river cruise with the Magic Lantern lighting the way! Keep look out as our course winds past pirate ships, serpents and other lost wonders of the river. We’ll need all hands ready on deck if we want to make it to Gravesend alive!
Long before the invention of cinema, travelling entertainers would use devices known as Magic Lanterns to enthral audiences with projected illusions. Artists Nicole Mollett and Frog Morris use this ancient wizardry to conjure up fantastical tales of monsters, forgotten places and satirical humour.
Calum F Kerr will appear as the White Whale with 'Cachalot Beckoning (Whale Echoing)': out of the waves, the raging storm, the White Whale emerges, the Cachalot returning, after three hundred years, beckoning the whales, those of Enderby Wharf in Greenwich, those sunk in the Thames and those pursued by the ships that sailed out past Gravesend.
Miyuki Kasahara will present a participatory play called 'The Portland Dispute' on the history and myths surrounding Gravesend's Portland Cement.
Plus a lineup of inspiral contributions from artists including Rachel Gomme, Anne Robinson, and selected guest artists from Gravesham Arts.
This event is part of the InspiralLondon 2017 Festival, (12-15 October 2017), celebrating the completion of the 300-mile Inspiral trail with walks, performances, workshops, installations and more between central London and Gravesend.
