Australian artist Jan Handel has a deep interest in colour relationships, the illusion of space within abstract painting and the structured geometry of the grid.
Made specifically for the gallery space of Factory 49 Paris,Inside a Painting, Gentlyis a 4 colour immersive installation accompanied by 10 small wall paintings in similar colours.
Re-interpreting traditional painting materials, Handel uses the gallery space as the support or ‘canvas’ for the coloured polyester films which stretch diagonally across the space. These films become the coloured ‘paint’.
The viewer is simultaneously ‘inside’ the gallery painting, and outside the wall paintings, creating an ambiguous spatial relationship. The wall works suggest infinite possibilities of arrangement of the four surrounding colours.
Illusory pictorial space is made real with material, colour and geometry.
