Injalak Arts is based in the Aboriginal Town of Gunbalanya, deep in the Northern Territory of Australia. Lying at the edge of a flood plain, 10 km from the East Alligator River, the land here is home to the most extraordinary cave paintings on earth.
About
'Injalak Arts: Works on Paper from West Arnhem Land', is the debut international exhibition from this important cultural centre and is highly influenced by the rock art of Injalak Hill, a sacred site home to paintings laid down for generations by the forebears of the artists presented here.
For tens of millennia, the Bininj people have painted on the sandstone walls of the Arnhem Plateau and its outlying hills. Today, this tradition continues, making it man’s oldest extant art form.
We thank the artists of Gunbalanya, and the Bininj people, for sharing their knowledge with us and for their careful and continued stewardship of the beautiful country in West Arnhem Land.
