'Incounters' presents works by 13 artists that investigate and play with interactions between self and world. The exhibiting artists provide numerous Incounters, reconnections, discoveries, and like the misspelling of encounter, something is apprehended that is perhaps slightly skewed and uncanny.
About
Our lived experiences are made up of sensory, perceptive, emotional, cognitive and relational incounters. From birth we enter into a range of meetings – compelled or instinctively drawn toward them in our seeking - where our embodied being interacts with, experiences and internalises the world around us and its inhabitants – whether other people, affects, objects, or environments. We take all of this in, inscribe it in our bodies, absorb it into the archive of our unconscious, or commit it to memory. In this sense, the world is in us as much as we are in the world. We are incounters.
Creative practice operates playfully within this dynamic – taking in lived experiences and then using art, materials, technologies to respond and externalise what we encounter in the world and with-in ourselves. The incounter is a cloud we are all chasing, the incounter is elusive and indescribable, it is something other, a thing outside of ourselves that counterintuitively, brings us inside of ourselves.
