Ina Jang - all roses are red, all birds are blue

Foley Gallery is delighted to present photographer Ina Jang’s first New York solo exhibition, all roses are red, all birds are blue.

Ina Jang creates work that is both playful and poetic. Many of her images start off with figures that become obscured in their surreal, hyper-stimulated environments. Her use of muted colors and surfaces creates a complex and multidimensional world in which reality and fiction are intertwined.

Jang says, "I make images that are minimal and two-dimensional by layering people, places and things to precisely execute ideas, but with the intention of discarding information. As I want the ideas to be tangible, the process becomes rigorously physical and related to my personal experience in terms of making photographs; it often contains cutting, gluing and pasting mundane objects from real life, such as paper and cotton balls. The photographs are often figurative and unidentified, casting a suspicion upon the photograph’s agenda. I allow the viewers to question whether they are truly subjects or merely objects. I investigate poetic and surreal relationships among things, places and womanhood. Peeling an apple at once without stopping in the middle, or looking at a pyramid from the sky in a small propeller plane...these are things experienced in real life but still manage to stay distant from who I am. "

Jang will be collaborating with the artist, Karen Cho, to create Coveted; a site specific window installation in our storefront, combining real life artifacts from her photography sets with Cho’s hand made vessels.

Jang was born in South Korea in 1982 and currently lives and works in New York. She graduated from The School of Visual Arts in New York with a Masters in Fashion Photography in 2012. Past exhibitions include the Empty Quarter in Dubai, the New York Photo Festival and the Humble Arts Foundation. Jang’s work has been published in The New York Times Magazine, Dear Dave Magazine, the British Journal of Photography, and Foam International Photography Magazine, amongst others.
