In Cixin Liu’s acclaimed first contact novel The Three-Body Problem, a lonely alien “listener” — tasked with monitoring the universe’s noise for signals of life — receives his planet’s first interstellar transmission from Earth. Taking this passage as a point of departure, In the Deep Silence of Midnight wonders about the otherworldly possibilities of art to act as a material and conceptual conduit for energy and experience.
