An exploration of the magic of words as see through the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala.
About
Nikolai Azariah's first solo show is based on the folklore and oral tradition of the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala. In the text, words are imbued with power, with rune-singers being the magicians of the world.
Vainamoinen, the eternal sage, embarks on a search for words of power, leading him through the land of the dead and eventually into a giant's belly. Inside the belly he attempts to force words and tales out of the giant by creating a forge and hammering at his innards.
This story has become a metaphor of Azariah’s wrestling with language as he has searched for a deeper connection with his Finnish heritage through the words and tales of Kalevala. The work will take the form of film installation.
