About
‘In Site’ is an exhibition at The Republic gallery by painters Natalie Winter and Laura McIntyre, photographer Frances Bakewell and artist Madeleine Wheeler.
In Site is a revisitation to Guy Debord’s elusive idea in the 1960s of psychogeography and the concept of choosing to enjoy your urban environment through movement.
Today, every day, 8.674 million people move around this city. Most will be finding the best and quickest routes from A to B as free time is precious and scarce. Others will choose to spend more time travelling to and fro to save money. The time lost to work affects our perception of travel; it becomes another means to an end and yet another loss of time.
What if we choose to view this movement differently?
The ideas inherent to psychogeography provides an alternative take on movement within urban environments: Movement can become spontaneous, intuitive, and playful if chosen to be. The artists exhibiting in ‘In Site’ all chose to explore this concept through different mediums to ascertain the effect on individual psyche, the cityscape and the communities surrounding them.
