About

The classroom is a site of order and disorder, containment and release. The context of the school offers the opportunity for an artist to be both participant and observer, to shift their practice sideways and to try out different roles. (In) Parentheses explores the limits of place and the activity of (dis) placement through work created as part of the Whitechapel Gallery's Artists-in-Residence programme. Artists Lisa Bradley, Duncan McAfee and Eleni Zagkali, whose practices span performance and sculpture, sound and painting, were resident artists for one year across three secondary schools. In collaboration with teachers at Tunmarsh PRU in Newham, Mulberry School for Girls in Tower Hamlets and Our Lady's Convent High School in Hackney, the artists led independent projects drawing upon their own studio practice, contemporary exhibitions and public space. The experience of the artists, students and teachers come together in this innovative group show.
