About

Joshua Bilton Jack Brindley Elena Damiani Ismail Erbil Bruce Ingramà‚  Minae Kim Patrick Michalopoulos Junko Otake Curated by Patrick Michalopoulos Private View - Wednesday 4th April, 6-8:30 p.m Exhibition dates: 4th April - 12th May Opening hours: Thursday - Saturday 12-6 p.m First Thursdays late opening: Thursday 3rd May 6-9 p.m ‘in FORWARD-REVERSE', curated by Patrick Michalopoulos at Schwartz Gallery, presents a series of deliberate miscommunications, apparent misuses and repositionings that together develop an ambiguous sense of ‘site'. Part of the gallery's basic physical structure is disrupted creating an anti-structure that mirrors inversions within specific works in the exhibition. Structures for the articulation of social, environmental, cultural and linguistic spheres are unpicked and re-constructed within anomalous contexts that reverberate within the gallery to create unorthodox sites of interaction between artworks, the gallery space and the viewer. Along this continuum the artists for ‘in FORWARD-REVERSE' use very different strategies to destabilise the idea of the gallery space activating an architecture of the unseen and of the transposed. The exhibition acts as an investigation that extends from ideas of entropy and augmented landscapes through to anti-painting and architectural palimpsests. Images are translated into sound giving rise to unexpected structures of misinformation and mistranslation that unravel received notions or ‘sites' of communication. The function of the gallery becomes inverted assuming the role of the artist's studio. In a range of new works made for this exhibition at Schwartz Gallery, what can be thought of as different sets of actions contest the boundaries of the art-object, the gallery as an architectural unit and the role of the viewer-interpreter. The gallery is in this way transformed in a subtle collapse of its functionality into that of a poetic cypher, lost in translation yet somehow re-discovered within it.
