In Conflict: Reflections on the Constant War in Iraq

About

Ten years on since the invasion of Iraq, New Art Exchange presents In Conflict: Reflections on the Constant War in Iraq, a solo show of Artist Satta Hashem, winner in 2012 of the New Art Exchange Prize awarded at the Nottingham Castle Open in 2011. Satta Hashem presents drawings, paintings and prints which comprise graphic, symbolic, figurative and abstract styles. His practice communicates the sympathy he feels for those that find themselves constantly in the middle of the conflict. Rugged, loose and chaotic, the aesthetic of a selection of Satta's works describe the human experience of living through conflict. In this exhibition, such collections are juxtaposed against representations of the brutal, impartial and ordered nature of the weaponry at the heart of such settings. Collectively Satta's practice captures the harshness of the topic of war, both objectively and as an immediate experience. Born in Buhriz — Diyala, near Baghdad in 1959, Satta now lives and works in Leicester, UK.
