About
In Clay: the exhibition brings together works by some thirty contemporary women artists working with clay. The exhibition is to complement the run of the musical In Clay at the same location. Based on the life and writings of French painter, potter and goldsmith, Marie-Berthe Cazin (1872-1971), the musical highlights the joys and sorrows of one woman’s life devoted to making art.
Marie-Berthe Cazin was overlooked as an artist during her lifetime and the story goes that many of her works were passed off as being by her husband, Michel Cazin. So an exhibition of works in clay celebrating 21st-century women artists practising and owning their art as energetically and individually as she did is the perfect accompaniment.
A wide range of practices is represented which reflects the extreme versatility of clay as a material. Works by established sculptors and potters will be seen alongside those emerging artists. Together the artists give the exhibition a global reach that includes China, Denmark, Equatorial Guinea, France, India, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Nigeria, Peru, Sweden, UK and USA.
Entrance to the exhibition is free. Tickets for the musical are available via the Upstairs At The Gatehouse website. https://www.upstairsatthegatehouse.com/
