‘Imagining Orwell’ exhibition tour with artist Julio Etchart, followed by screening of ‘1984’ and panel discussion on relevance of George Orwell's work today
About
Documentary photographer Julio Etchart will give a conducted tour of his Imagining Orwell exhibition, followed by a screening of Michael Radford’s stunning '1984', based on Orwell's famous novel.
Award winning photojournalist Julio Etchart followed the trail of two of George Orwell’s great books: ‘Burmese Days’ and ‘Homage to Catalonia’, combining images of the original locations in Burma/Myanmar and Spain, with excerpts from his writings, in an unique exhibition to commemorate the 70th anniversary of his death.
The screening will be followed by a short panel discussion with audience participation on the relevance of George Orwell’s work in our uncertain times, with journalist Vanessa Baird, co-editor of the New Internationalist magazine, and Prof. David Bate.
Vanessa Baird has been a co-editor of the New Internationalist magazine for many years and has written on everything from migration, religion and equality, to indigenous activism, climate change, feminism and global LGBT rights.
Dr. David Bate is a Professor of Photography at the University of Westminster School of Arts. As well as supervising PhD work and teaching on the MA Photography Arts programme, he is an artist and writer with a well known international reputation for his work on photography, visual arts history, theory and culture.
