Images Will Tell gathers recent works by emerging artist Grace Nkem, including oil paintings on canvas and on recycled materials, as well as drawings.

About

Grace Nkem who grew up in California and studied art history at Columbia University is half African, half Russian. She often juxtaposes in her paintings African artifacts with images that refer to our Western culture, including her native Russia.

While her work is inspired by various art movements such as 20th century surrealism, it is firmly grounded in our contemporary world of globalization and hypercommunication. The artist juggles elements, in a practice where images from very different registers add layers to the painting's main subject.

Nkem considers that “when objects are put beside one another in a picture, a connection inevitably arises between them, both for the artist, and for the viewer”. Each viewer, bringing their individual identity and social context, will forge their own interpretation of Grace Nkem's art.

To connect the compelling work of artist Grace Nkem with Brooklyn communities, an exhibit will be held in Gallery Particulier's townhouse in Prospect Leffert Gardens from December 7 until January 22, 2023. Gallery Particulier is located at 281 Maple St, Brooklyn, NY. Private viewing by RSVP will take place December 7, from 5:30pm until 7:30pm. After opening, viewing by appointment: contact@galleryparticulier.org
