Opening 7 April, Old Palestine House, Brighton: I’M LIKE A FISH, AND FIERCE LIKE A LION, WHEN I ENTER THE RING OF FIRE presents drawings and testimonies by young people in Gaza, with a programme of events.
About
I’M LIKE A FISH, AND FIERCE LIKE A LION, WHEN I ENTER THE RING OF FIRE brings together drawings and written testimonies developed with young people in Gaza during the escalated genocide, through workshops facilitated by the Tamer Institute for Community Education.
Produced amid sustained bombardment, repeated displacement, and the destruction of homes, schools, and neighbourhoods, these works emerge from conditions in which everyday life has been systematically dismantled. They trace memory, movement, and the shifting meanings of home.
The works were created as part of Masar al Awda ilal Bayt (the route back home), a series of workshops inviting children to map home as something remembered, imagined, and continually reconfigured. Across multiple sessions, children drew domestic interiors, neighbourhood routes, and places altered or lost through violence.
These works do not form a single narrative. They register interruption, rupture, and attempts to orient within an environment that is constantly changing. Language and image move between memory, imagination, and witness.
Developed in the midst of ongoing genocide, the drawings and testimonies are held here as forms of expression and political speech, foregrounding children’s authorship and resisting their reduction to humanitarian imagery or spectacle.
