‘I’m gonna delete you’ is the latest painting installation by Rebecca Molloy. In 2019, Molloy was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. A chronic pain condition that left her bed bound and unable to work. ‘I’m gonna delete you’ chronicles this period of living with a disability, being in intolerable amounts of pain and the grief that comes with such a condition.
Within the painting, a myriad of body parts, twisted spines and devil like faces pop in and out of the image. For Molloy, these fragmented bodies represent what it feels like to live with the condition. A face screams in pain as a knife enters the skull, skeletons vomit up green sick and floating throbbing legs fall through the image. These disembodied limbs signify the confusion felt by the artist, as she became consumed by a body that was breaking and by a condition that took so much away from her.
Although the painting tackles a very dark subject matter, it is also approached with playfulness and humour. Ridiculous cartoon like figures are dotted around the fresco and there are moments of humour as these figures interact with each other. Smiley faces and bodies flying are also dotted throughout the work to bring glimmers of hope back to the piece.
In the final iteration of this work, Molloy will turn the piece from a physical installation into a 3D model and launch it as an NFT in July. Finding a way to preserve the physical work, whilst also deleting it, will hopefully be a cathartic moment in this journey for the artist.
