About
Damaris Athene is a multi-disciplinary artist whose practice takes in painting, printmaking, sculpture, performance and photography. She is fascinated by the ways that the digital world affects our perception of our bodies and our interactions with others. For her exhibition ‘If Only I Could Be 2D’ at Compact Contemporary (1st - 22nd June 2021) Damaris has created abstract forms in an installation using digital imagery and sculptural paintings, which unnervingly suggest host-less, fleshy body parts covering the walls and filling the spaces of the gallery.
Damaris is a studio holder at Wysing Arts Centre in Cambridge and a graduate of Camberwell College of Arts, London. She was selected for the BEEP Painting Prize in 2018, and the Clyde & Co Art Award in 2015. Solo exhibitions include I Wish I was As Hot As my Memoji (2021) @the.open.dresser.gallery Cheer Up Love (2019) Peterhouse Old Brewhouse, Cambridge, and I Shall Walk Softly There (2018) Wigan S.T.E.A.M., Wigan.
She also interviews female artists on her blog Private View.
Compact Contemporary is an art gallery in a repurposed dolls’ house; which hosts a programme of emerging artists and is curated by Helen Dryden in her home in Leeds.
