jens fehring gallery will be opening an exhibition on 5.11.2009 entitled âif i were to want what i want i would be
hereâ featuring works by artist Juliane Melches, who was born in Herford and now lives in Dresden. The exhibition
will open at 7:00 p.m.
In spite of dusky lighting, cloud formations that are reminiscent of tornadoes, and open plains, the imaginary landscapes
painted by Juliane Melches do not exude any uplifting or romantic sense of grandeur whatsoever. Powerful,
dominant motifs provided by nature itself contrast with precision details executed with the help of carefully applied
translucency and layering techniques. Her landscapes are often rough, virtually hostile, and reminiscent of far away
planets or deep sea trenches. And yet this non-terrestrial bleakness is densely populated with signs of attempts at
In her work, the artist strives to uncover both subjective and collective fears, desires and hopes. Just like the fictitious
residents of her landscapes who are never visible to the observer, she battles to secure a small corner of this
self-chosen, barren desolation for her artistic research projects.
The exhibition will be open for viewing from 6.11. - 5.12.2009 at jens fehring gallery in Frankfurt/Sachsenhausen.
