About

Kingston Art Group warmly invites you to: IDEAS MATTER - by Dom Heffer Opening on — Friday 1st August 2014, 6-9pm, at KAG Gallery, 26 — 27 Humber Street, Hull, HU1 1TH ‘IdeasMatter' presents a body of work that focuses on the tipping scale between the ‘mental event' of an idea and the manifestation of this event in ‘matter'. Dom's practice attempts to create a balance between a cultivation of reverie and joyful abandon in matter. Ideas are fast and there exists a time lag in the see-saw motion between conception and execution; moments of equilibrium are rare. The work gives credence to the many states that are encountered in the creative process, especially the doubts and decision-making processes that are usually left out of the viewers' experience of a work, in this sense Dom's practice acknowledges the ‘rendering processes visible' zeitgeist cultivated by an exposure to projects run by Hull Time Based Arts. Dom refers to his large canvases as ‘attention screens' in which imaginary characters, often self-parodies called 'Stooges', interact with dubious machines to no obvious result other than the ‘resolution' of an image. A selection of these canvases are on display here, with an installation of an erratic pipe network that emerged from the obsessive repetition of such motifs in the 2-D works and have the effect of ‘cartoonifying' the Gallery space. Dom lives and works in Hull, he has been a member of Kingston Art Group for five years, he was shortlisted for the Woolgather Art Prize in 2012, has worked with the Media Ecology Association, Michigan, 20-21 Visual Arts Centre, and is currently preparing new work for The Institute of General Semantics' 2014 symposium in New York. This project has been made possible through a research and development grant from Arts Council England. The Exhibition is open from Saturday 2nd — Sunday 31st August from 12-4pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays or by appointment by calling: 07980 474580
