About
Nel Burke has been making collages since 1989 when she was a student of Fine Art at Central St Martins. Nel has been a member of a women’s art group since the 1980s and exhibited with them and showed her work in other mixed shows.
Since June 2018 she has been working on a series of collages (ID cards) which have reached 200 in number; these explore identity and proof of existence, as well as creating identities. What could identity mean - national, sexual, racial, and cultural? Identification with age or size? How do we represent ourselves to others?
Nel Burke’s influences are Hannah Hoech, Kurt Schwitters, John Stalin’s postcards, surrealism and seventies punk.
